How do you go with the Flow?
Updated: Nov 3, 2022
An excerpt I Iove from the book Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is this:
"…Flow… describes the sense of seemingly effortless movement. Although the flow experience appears to be effortless, it is far from being so. It often requires… highly disciplined mental activity. …while it lasts, consciousness works smoothly, action follows action seamlessly. In normal life, we keep interrupting what we do with doubts and questions. 'Why am I doing this? Should I perhaps be doing something else?' Repeatedly we question the necessity of our actions and evaluate critically the reasons for carrying them out. But in flow there is no need to reflect, because the action carries us forward as if by magic."
How many times in our lives do we interrupt what we are doing with doubts and questions? Oh, my goodness! I do that every time I begin a new creative project! The mind is tricky and comes up with all kinds of distractions to keep us from doing what we really need to do. The key is to notice this pattern and to remind yourself to just focus on one thing at a time. When I focus on one thing at a time, I can open up the space for flow to happen.
Let me know what you think about that in the comment section below. Have you ever been in a state of FLOW? What were you doing and what was your experience?
